Film: An Interdisciplinary Industry

The diverse world of filmmaking cannot be traced back to any single craft or trade. Filmmaking is an industry which unites the creative talents of artists and entertainers with the skills and vision of business professionals. It requires knowledge of several disciplines and experiences from many walks of life.

The Interdisciplinary Studies program at Arizona State University prepares students for diverse career fields such as filmmaking, by enabling students to combine two or more disciplines into one inclusive major. Students have the unique opportunity to choose the two concentration areas they wish to integrate, and learn to apply these principles and teachings to their future career. As opposed to the separation of majoring in one subject and minoring in another, students benefit from understanding the concurrent relationship and synergy of the two concentrations and their application in a future career field.

Choosing Interdisciplinary Studies as a major was an easy choice for me. I wanted a major that would not only enable me to benefit from the knowledge that two concentrations would provide, but also how I could integrate them both in my career field. As film is a medium that crosses cultural and territorial divides, I wanted to understand the vast world of Mass Communications – how the messages in my films would be spread, received and interpreted worldwide. I also, however, wanted to be an expert in communications, knowing that, as a Producer, I would need to not only convey an ethical and meaningful message to a vast audience, but also communicate effectively with business professionals and investors, as well as co-workers and crew members.
